Summary/Objective

Lyman Products Corporation is currently looking for a talented Product Design and Development Engineer to join our team to support the growing needs of our exciting Mark 7 Division.  This position will be located in our Fort Myers, FL facility and will work very closely with the engineering team in our Connecticut headquarters.  

Our Mark 7 Division, acquired in 2019, represents the future of consumer and commercial reloading and has unlimited growth potential.  The position will offer the right candidate the opportunity to be an integral part of the development and future of this innovative product line.  

Responsibilities will include product design, prototype development, product testing, design for manufacturing, and manufacturing integration.  Candidates will have the opportunity to bring products from ideation to market while working with all ranges of employees from Mechanical Assemblers to the CEO.  The position requires talent, high energy, attention to detail, a team-based attitude, and a willingness to go the distance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The items listed below are intended to give a broad overview of the areas in which the Product Design and Development Engineer will operate.  Many of these activities will be carried out by a team of individuals with the Design Engineer either taking on the lead role or supporting the efforts in various capacities.

Design and Development Engineering Functions (primary functions)

  • Design of new products and accessories based on internally developed requirements and external market data
  • Improve existing products and processes with a heavy focus on sustaining engineering
  • Craft models and drawings using CAD (SolidWorks)
  • Construct physical prototypes, perform iterative testing and analysis, and optimize designs for production
  • Ensure products are compliant with the industry’s safety standards, are user-friendly, and outclass the competition
  • Maintain accurate records, document the design process, and present progress reports as needed
  • Develop creative solutions that increase internal production efficiency and help to solve issues in the field

Manufacturing & Quality Engineering Functions (secondary functions)

 

  • Improve manufacturing and assembly methods, support the advancement of manufacturing technology
  • Design and manufacture of fixturing and other tools intended to increase product quality, throughput, and general safety
  • Oversight of incoming inspection process by confirming specifications, conducting visual and measurement testing as needed, and working with operations on rejecting/returning unacceptable materials or products
  • Document inspection results by completing required reports and log entries. Implements quality trend analysis.
  • Develop corrective actions, solutions, and improvements.  Works closely with Operation through closure.
  • Work closely with vendors, providing feedback on their quality (vendor scorecard)
  • Keep all measurement equipment logged, orderly & in optimal condition by following O&M instructions and keeping calibrations current.
  • Identify any new equipment needed to assure that parts/materials can be inspected properly
  • Help to maintain and refine the company’s overall Quality Management System, and all resulting processes/documentation product.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering (ME preferred)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a developed sense of urgency
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, creativity, and project management skills
  • Highly effective designing in CAD (Solidworks), and in presenting concepts to project stakeholders
  • Experience in taking new products from concept through product launch and full lifecycle
  • Motivated to achieve project milestones ahead of schedule, while maintaining alignment on goals, organized files and attention to detail.
  • Ability to function in a team environment, respond to changing priorities, and take direction from leadership
  • Comfortable motivating and leading project teams with enthusiasm and drive toward continuous improvement
  • Experience with Manufacturing Engineering and implementation of Lean concepts and processes
  • Experience with Quality Assurance strategy and Quality Control application to support production
  • Highly effective in using MS Excel, Word, and Outlook to perform daily reporting, analysis and communication
  • Experience working within an ERP System (Mark-7 uses PLEX, which is similar to SAP or Oracle).

The Design Engineer operates in a manufacturing environment.  This role routinely involves movement through all areas of the facility, designing and testing within engineering and QA/QC areas, resolving manufacturing issues with current and new products, as well as work in a standard office environment involving computer/phone work, recurring meetings, and vendor interaction.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), with standard hours being Monday through Friday starting at 8:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm, to include a 1-hour lunch break.  Work outside of standard hours may be required as needed in certain circumstances.  See the company handbook for recognized paid holidays, time-off policies, and other details.

The Design Engineer will not initially have direct reports, however, will be taking the lead on NPD and sustaining engineering projects and shall provide team leadership when needed.  When the company grows to the point of needing more resources in Engineering, there is potential for managing a small staff at that time.

  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds seldomly.
  • Vision abilities required are close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Provided magnifying equipment may be used for some inspection work.
  • PPE required (and provided) when working with certain tools or in certain situations.  Business casual dress otherwise.
